Recently someone asked me whether the Art market had taken a beating? I replied that Art as an Investment in India was experimented with for the first time, and all markets have taken a beating. Perhaps a correction was required? However - paintings are still being purchased and art galleries are still busy? Your comments on the true picture?

My own estimates are that gallery chains are responsible for creating and cllapsing art market till demand for typical art is generated and sustained new players are not benefited
I agree with you, look at the labelling --- a few years ago it was Abstracts and Modern Art, all of a sudden two years ago Contemporary Art was the big thing. Today at the Harmony Show organized by Tina Ambani all of a sudden, Contemporary Art is dropped and we are back to "Traditional Art". Is this perhaps because Indian Contemporary Art took a beating recently in New York City?
I think, this is mainly because of the recession.Art is still bought but very carefully.Unnecessary increasing and boosting of prices to mediocre works by by galleries and auction houses has given blow to real art, Many collectors are repenting on their wrong investment. Now afterwords when economy of the country becomes normal, I am sure the genuine art will emerge and win...........K.Khosa
I sincerely hope so, as pricing of artworks is definately an issue of concern in this field. The latest trend now is that Art galleries are now introducing Prints and Posters which work out to be cheaper and attract a different market. Any thoughts on this?

I am in LA and the Art Dealers here are all with holding them selves so tight they can't sell. They are holding on to what they got for what ever reason. The market is so ossified that there is no market at all now. The other problem here in the states , NYC particularly is the politics of the Art world. This is a politic beyond anything on earth. I tell you this as it acts as a hidden influence on all Art all over the world. I for one do not see the need to fixate on those involved in that to be allowed to create. I create with my own license .
