Kae Ishimoto was born into a family of accomplished traditional Japanese dancers. She began to study jazz dance at age five, however, and this led to her carving a place for herself as a dancer that was in contradistinction to the Ishimoto family legacy. At age 15 she started pursuing modern and contemporary dance and took on these influences very deeply. Ms. Ishimoto arrived in Tokyo at age 20 aiming to construct an original, genre-less style that suited her desire to synthesize various elements and traditions of dance. She studied Indian dance and theater and was fortunate enough to meet the famed BUTOH dancer Yukio Waguri, with whom she has studied and performed since 2002. In 2003, she also joined the well-known contemporary dance company CO. Yamada Un. Through these diverse performing opportunities Ms. Ishimoto has established a reputation as an outstanding figure among up-and-coming contemporary dancers in Japan. Her style blends an Eastern sense of the body with a borderless sensitivity that can express both specific and universal themes.
